No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
